Data Warehouse Solution

A steamship equipment depot management facility that stores and repairs equipment for some of the largest steamship companies in the world had the following challenges:

  • Sharing information among its multiple facilities.
  • Providing customers with timely and credible repair estimates.
  • Providing timely and accurate information to their customers regarding their equipment.
  • Providing customers with an interface that would allow them to view equipment activity, approve repairs and create bookings.
  • Providing customers data that can be integrated into their own systems and applications. 

Working together with our client, Aptude built a robust data warehouse application that allowed the depot's customers to access the new enterprise system via a secure Internet connection.

  • Gate activity (storage) was captured in real-time using a hand-held device with images that updated a live database via a 802.11 b connection.
  • Repair estimates were also generated on the hand-held unit as intermodal equipment came into the depot. The repair estimates were also sent to the database via an 802.11 connection. Once the repair was stored in the database, a scheduled job would electronically notify the depot's client that a repair estimate was created for a particular unit and an approval or disapproval action was needed. With password authority to view the repair estimate and the images related to the repair, the depot's client could then approve or disapprove the repair estimate.

The new hand-held/repair piece can potentially save days in the repair estimating process. Furthermore, the new application sends hourly data feeds to its customers in the format they require. This is truly a business-to-business application that has increased labor efficiencies, provided immediacy and increased customer satisfaction.

Mobile Application Solution


A leading Inland Container and Steamship-Line organization with multiple facilities around the United States had an enterprise custom web-based application that tracked container and chassis information as it entered and exited the yard gate. Data captured was logged via paper and then at the end of the day was entered into the client’s web-based custom solution. Additional data integration occurred with their clients who were steamship companies. Information disseminated included repair estimates, daily storage charges and other related information regarding the containers and chassis.


The client's existing legacy system incurred delays, while labor cost and errors were embedded in their manual processes. An example workflow would be that a repair would be noted on the check-in sheet, while another inspector would later go into the field and create an estimate on paper - this information was further entered into the website and pushed to the client, creating several layers of redundancy.

Additionally, delays occurred in disseminating information to their clients - container and chassis information which the client desired was typically delayed by a day due to the lag in entering the data into the website.


Aptude created a Hybrid mobile application for the inspector at the gate that captured both inbound and outbound gate traffic and pushed it to the internal applications as well as the client in real time. In addition, repair estimates (when needed) were generated at check-in with related videos and photos of the repair estimate. The repair estimate with related back-up information was pushed to the client for approval. The implementation of the Hybrid mobile application took a labor intensive process which often caused several days of delay, and reduced it to minutes - thereby increasing revenue, reducing opportunity for user error and labor cost.

Big Data Solution

Our client, a leader in the Transportation and Logistics domain, was facing this big data predicament. Combined, their trucks travel roughly 8 million miles per day to deliver their cargo.  The Client needed a method to effectively analyze truck travel patterns to gain an understanding on a myriad of issues including how many “empty miles” were accrued on routes and subsequently make adjustments for more efficient deliveries. Utilizing their in-house logistics tracking software, the Client had been temporarily storing log files for analyzing and debugging issues related to the optimizer’s “selection process”. Due to the massive amount of data being pushed into these files, they were only retaining this data for a short duration. Additionally, since the data was unstructured, developers would have to manually extract, parse, and search the data every time they needed to perform an analysis.

Big Data Business Case

A solution was needed to add structure to these data logs, provide the ability to run ad-hoc queries when issues occurred and perform analytics against the data to improve trucking route efficiency. A traditional relational database system would be too resource-intensive due to volume and velocity. The Client needed a big data solution.

Aptude Consulting Big Data Solution – The Hadoop Implementation

After obtaining information through our discovery and requirements gathering process, we architected a big data solution utilizing Hadoop in conjunction with a combination of other key open-source components to harness its full potential. In doing so, we created the MapReduced architecture illustrated below.

Our solution pre-processes and prepares the data to be consumed, creating a “solution” and “problem” file. These files are then aggregated and distributed: log files where sent to Solr for indexing and “solution” data to HDFS. Data is then passed into a sink to process and load it into a Hadoop component, which is then distributed to Solr Cloud and HDFS, respectively. The end result is structured data availability in multiple formats, with flexibility for low latency queries provided through Cloudera Impala and data visualization with OBIEE connectivity.

End Results

With minimal hardware resources and a collection of open-source software requiring no licensing fees, we realized the Client’s big data solution at a fraction of the cost a traditional relational database solution would have required. The Hadoop implementation resulted in cost and time savings, with an additional benefit from the boost in productivity they will achieve with their new analytical assets.

3PL Mobile Tracking Solution

Our client, a large Transportation and Logistics company, needed a tracking solution that would run on any smart phone leveraging either iOS or Android. The solution requirements included delivering real-time, verifiable information on every load brokered to 3rd party carriers. The solution must track freight in an automated fashion that would allow our client, their drivers and carriers the ability to do their job better.

The system needed the following capabilities:

  • Driver Interface - mobile application that allows the driver the ability to download the app to his iPhone/android. The mobile application will facilitate communication among the driver, carrier and our client. The Driver Interface allows guides the driver through load workflow, providing information back to the carrier.
  • Real Time Load Tracking - The system should never stop providing real time status updates on loads as they near pick-up and destinations. Single and multi-stop shipments are continually monitored thereby providing validated location updates needed to manage their supply chain.
  • Automated Pick-Up and Departure Confirmations - The solution utilizes geo-fencing for shipment origins and destinations. Automated prompts for the driver makes it easy to stay on top of updates of arrival or departure
  • Event Status Updates - The system allows for critical updates to our client and carriers. Furthermore, additional documentations such as inbound/outbound related information and documentation.
